June 18, 2010, Newsletter Issue #172: Athame

Tip of the Week

An athame is a ritual knife that is used in various magickal workings. It is usually double edged with a sharp point. The athame is never used for cutting of mundane objects, but is used in ritual and magick to direct energy to a specific purpose, such as casting a circle. The athame is also symbolic of the element of Fire, and thus is associated with masculine energies.

Traditionally the athame had a black handle, but today they are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes.

Another quick tip, the word is usually pronounced "ah-thah-may" ... not "ah-thaym" :-)
