January 8, 2010, Newsletter Issue #150: Safety without numbers

Tip of the Week

Q: What is the safest way to practice when you are first starting out? I was told once it is safer to practice on your own before joining a coven, knowing that there are a lot of weirdos out in the world.

A: Solitary wicca is a great way to start out, not only because of the very real threat of "weirdos" but also because it gives you a chance to discover and become comfortable with the religion privately at a pace that you are comfortable with.

Even if you do plan to join a coven later on, it is a good idea to learn a little bit about the religion in advance so that you can find a coven that is a good match to your beliefs. Plus it will give you the knowledge to recognize if the coven you are looking into is legitimate. Knowledge is power.

Some great books to start out with on your own include:

Bucklandīs Complete Book of Witchcraft (Ray Buckland)
The Craft / The Craft Companion (Dorothy Morrison)
Wicca - A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Scott Cunningham)
